I have a large range of services to offer my customers and no two jobs are ever the same. Much of my work is within the Domestic setting with the remainder being small Commercial.Most of my customers are based within around five miles of Gillingham (Dorset) which sees me cover the towns of Gillingham, Shaftesbury, Stalbridge, Wincanton and Mere and the surrounding villages. Whether for the Homeowners for peace of mind, Commercial premises for insurance purposes or Private Rental Sector owners for legal purposes, an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) is a document which, in much the same way as an MOT for your car, will highlight the actions you need to take now, to take soon or just keep an eye on. Although there’s no obligation to replace the older rewireable fuse box, there’s definitely something to be said for the ability to just lift a circuit breaker to bring a circuit back on. And with modern circuit breakers now incorporating Residual Current Devices, there’s the guarantee of additional protection and the reassurance that one faulty circuit won’t cause half the box to fail to reset, meaning your lights will stay on when the dishwasher packs up. So is it really worth still fumbling around in the dark to find your old card of fusewire? These are becoming more common, and while many people charge their cars on leads plugged into a standard domestic socket outlet and others have the older “dumb” EV Chargepoints, the new lines of Smart Chargers offer certain advantages. Some can be set to charge only when renewable energy eg Solar Panels are making locally generated power available to the property. Others can be set to use special tariffs now available for overnight charging of cars. Most are controlled by a phone app and almost all can be over-ridden to begin an immediate charging cycle. if regular Electrical Inspections are the Preventative Medicine, then this is the Cure. It’s astonishing how many jobs I attend as autumn sets in that are related either to water ingress at light fittings and other enclosures or are problems caused by rodents coming in to nest in warm, dry lofts and chewing cables to pieces. In many cases a formal EICR should give an indication of impending trouble.
