The Electricity at work regulations state that you must maintain your electrical equipment and of course portable appliance testing is a good way of providing the adequate reports/evidence if required.  As to having it done annually this is a complete myth, it all depends on your own business risk assessment based on several factors.  Sometimes insurance companies will dictate that you must have your equipment tested and of course sometimes they also state the frequency that it needs to be retested, so it is always worth making sure with your individual insurance companies.

Typical retests we perform range from every 3 months on some construction sites to 2/3 years for static office equipment.  Retest periods are subject to change and this is where the evidence of the equipment condition is key as if you have equipment that never requires repairs and tests perfectly every time you can legitimately lengthen the time between retests thus giving your company a more efficient maintenance model saving money on your bottom line.
