We are Tow-Trust Approved towbar fitters in Oxford and we also offer a full range of auto electrical and electrical fault diagnostics across Oxfordshire county.
We make it our business as responsible towbar installation company to keep fully abreast of all the latest legislation and installation requirements needed to integrate your towbar fitting safely with the auto electrical systems found on modern day vehicles.
Did you know? Some newer vehicles have the ability to recognise when a trailer or caravan is connected to the electrical towing connection? these cars will then adjust the suspension and braking capabilities of the vehicle to compensate for the additional load placed on the vehicle – without this electrical integration the vehicles handling and braking characteristics may be compromised and this could lead to a potentially dangerous situation for you the driver. This is a serious consideration when you are contemplating a towbar fitting.
Many installation companies will install a regular “by-pass system” into the vehicles electrical system, which does the job of providing power to your caravan or trailer lighting system adequately ,but doesn’t inform the vehicle it has an extra load attached! A lot of German Car Manufacturers have equipped their vehicles with this towing detection technology, so please bear in mind the extra cost of interfacing this system with your towbar installation – it is a small price to pay for the peace-of-mind provided by the correct installation.
Each of the systems above are affected in different ways when a trailer is ‘detected’. Vital systems such as engine cooling and brake electronics will function and react differently.
TSP (Trailer Stability Program) is one feature which is being added to many vehicles to help correct the ‘snaking’ action of a trailer. But with such advanced technology, braking systems have evolved even further by being operated electronically, without the need for hydraulics!
Braking has become more controlled with faster braking efficiency when towing! Suspension systems can now detect a trailer and allow for a more level towing adjustment when a load is applied on the towing hitch. ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) systems are meant to ‘detect’ a trailer in order to help set a greater braking distance between vehicles.
